A posh and elderly Washington-based couple have been accused of spying for the Cuban government for the best 30 years, employing, among other devices, the ingenious use of supermarket trolleys to transmit information.
Walter Kendall Myers, 72, is a retired U.S. state department analyst who has enjoyed a high level of security clearance; his wife Gwendolyn Steingraber Myers, 71, is a retired banker. The couple have pleaded not guilty to all counts of spying; however they are known to have traveled to Cuba on many occasions under assumed names; to be friendly with many Cuban officials; and to have an apartment full of high-tech spy equipment,
Fidel has shared a few thoughts about the case, about which, he explains, he was informed via eight different wire services ““yesterday [Friday] afternoon, while I was analyzing at great length Obama’s speech at the Muslim University at Cairo”.
El Jefe neither confirms nor denies anything, but he does say that, “if all this was proven, I could only admire their disinterested conduct and courage on behalf of Cuba”. He goes on to conclude his reflection with the rhetorical question, “Doesn’t everyone think this Cuban espionage comic strip is well ridiculous?”
Here is an excerpt in which el Jefe elaborates on his thoughts about U.S. agents, generally speaking:
“For my part, I can assure you that, as a matter of principles, we never tortured anyone, nor did we pay anyone in order to obtain any information. Those who, in one way or another, contributed to protecting the lives of Cuban citizens from terrorist plans and plots to assassinate their leaders, numerous agendas by several United States administrations, did so under the imperative of their own consciences, and deserve, to my mind, all the honors in the world.
“What’s curious is that this news came to light 24 hours after the defeat suffered by the United States in the General Assembly of the OEA [Organization of America States].
“It’s really strange that if these persons were under control, there must have been FBI agents who had been deceiving the Cuban spies, why were they not arrested earlier and why at that moment?
“Now the game of supposed justice will begin, against two persons morally crushed beforehand with accusations that will predetermine the conduct of the jury that must decide if they are guilty or innocent. They will certainly not receive the friendly treatment that that country’s government gives to terrorists who were recruited to destroy the Cuban aeroplane with all its passengers, and to commit horrible crimes against our people…
“The confrontation with the United States is ideological and has nothing to do with security in this country…”
